Feltwell - a little known tracking base on the Norfolk-Suffolk border. Home of the US 5th Space Surveillance Squadron.

FYLINGDALES

On the remote Fylingdales Moor in North Yorkshire three giant "golfballs", 43 metres in diameter once marked the whereabouts of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) radar at "RAF" Fylingdales. Probably the most significant strategic installation in Yorkshire and is of direct relevance to plans for the United States’ Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) and Strategic Defence Initiative (SDI - "Star Wars") systems. The three golf balls housed three mechanically steerable radar dishes.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s the 3 golf-balls were replaced ("upgraded") by a Large Phased Array pyramid. The current radar is set to be upgraded again shortly to become an integral part of the US BMD system.

LAKENHEATH

The Suffolk base, one of several US nuclear bases surrounded by farms in the East Anglia countryside. The base for F15 bombers used for strikes against Bosnia and Iraq. The site of two accidents involving US nuclear weapons in 1956 and 1961.

MENWITH HILL

Covering more than 500 acres this is the US National Security Agency's biggest eavesdropping centre. It plays a key role in a world-wide surveillance network that intercepts and analyses communications from Europe, Russia and the Middle East. The base is continually being expanded and recently building has started on the ground based station for the Space Based Infra Red System (SBIRS) which will be an important part of the US Ballistic Missile Defence system.
